Outline of Lakota Culture 104
(The 4 Levels of Native Acculturation)
The level to which Native People adopt the surrounding culture can be generally divided into four categories:
1) Traditional
2) Culturally Immersed
3) Bicultural
4) Fully Acculturated
1) TRADITIONAL (1:29): A traditional person neither accepts nor rejects their Native Identity. They simply accept who they are.
Very few Native people are traditional in this sense.
They are usually the older members of a tribe.
2) CULTURALLY IMMERSED (3:26): The Culturally Immersed Native person is familiar with Non-Native culture, but prefers to remain aligned with the uniquely Native Culture.
Non-natives may view the Culturally Immersed Native person as “militant”.
3) BICULTURAL (4:51): The bicultural person has pride in their native heritage, but also integrated into non-native culture.
This person is comfortable in both worlds.
4) FULLY ACCULTURATED (6:30): This person has chosen to fully adopt non-native culture.
Many of these people reach a point at which they desire to become familiar with their heritage.
LAKOTA CULTURE 104:
